We are excited to kickoff the year with Ramon Padilla, P.E. of Terracon. Mr. Padilla is a Senior Principal, Vice President, and Geotechnical Regional Manager for Terracon, and is based in the Tempe, Arizona office.  He has over 25 years of professional experience on a wide variety of projects, mainly in Arizona. Mr. Padilla has planned, conducted, and completed geotechnical investigations and studies for numerous projects, including municipal, county and state projects, (transportation) bridge and roadway related structures, federal/military facilities, renewable energy (solar) structures, forensic evaluations, embankments, slopes, infrastructure, and commercial and residential developments. Mr. Padilla’s experience on geotechnical projects include project planning, proposal preparation, preparing field and laboratory testing programs, performing engineering evaluations and analyses, developing engineering recommendations including shallow and deep foundations, preparing technical reports, and providing consultation to clients during the different phases of project development. Mr. Padilla is also experienced in the engineering observation and materials testing phases during the construction of projects. The presentation on March 26th will include an overview of technical aspects for design of drilled shaft foundations and shallow spread footings, as well as an overview of additional data resources that go beyond geology.

Terracon has graciously offered to host this meeting at their offices in Tempe.

“The Scope of Geohazards in Arizona Impacting Highways”

Arizona has three main physiographic provinces including: the Colorado Plateau with predominately flat sedimentary rock layers; the Transition Zone with the northwest to southeast trending mountain ranges and narrow valleys; and in southern Arizona the northwest to southeast trending Basin and Range Province. These basins are often many miles wide and filled with several thousand feet of alluvial materials typically containing hundreds of feet of deep unconfined aquifers, remnants of a much wetter period in Arizona’s geologic history. These three large geographic areas have common and sometimes unique geologic hazards. Examples of these hazards include: landslides, post wildfire issues, debris flows, rock falls, sinkholes, earth subsidence impacts, earth cracks and giant desiccation cracks.  The remedies employed by transportation geotechnical practitioners are varied depending on geologic conditions, budget and the risk to the traveling public.

Ty Atmaca and drone team for Orphan Well project

Ty Atmaca will be discussing “Applications of Drone Geophysics for Orphan Well Delineation”. The Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission estimates that there could be as many as 800,000 undocumented orphan wells across the United States. These wells can pose a significant environmental threat due to the increased risk of groundwater contamination and methane emissions. Recent advances in technology have made the use of drones for various techniques more feasible for these types of projects.

Mr. Atmaca has been a geophysicist for over 10 years with experience performing various geophysical methods for environmental assessments, hydrogeologic evaluations, geologic and geophysical site characterization, environmental remediation, and subsurface utility engineering (SUE) in locations across the globe. More recently, Ty has developed a passion for the use of drone magnetometers for the location of orphan wells. This diverse background allows Ty to meet client expectations, demanding schedules, and federal and state regulations.

In addition, we will be providing an update on the Phoenix chapter and our plans for the year.

David Bardsley, PG

David Bardsley, PG has nearly 40 years of geotechnical, water supply and environmental drilling experience working in a variety of settings across the United States. He started his career as a drill rig helper advancing through various technical and managerial positions in both small and large drilling companies. He was an early leader in the use of horizontal directional drilling and well installation methods to solve complex environmental and water supply challenges.

Mr. Bardsley has a B.S. in Geology & Geophysics along with a Communications Minor (1984) from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He is a licensed well driller in Texas, Arizona and Louisiana and holds RG/PG certifications in TX, MO, LA, and TN.

The topic of the night will be:

Horizontal drilling is an innovative subsurface access technology that delivers increased communication between contamination and remediation solutions. This non-commercial seminar lasts approximately 50 minutes and attendees will leave with a basic understanding of the following horizontal environmental well installation fundamentals:

  • History of horizontal environmental wells
  • Applications and advantages of horizontal wells
  • Horizontal drilling and well installation nomenclature
  • Drilling, installation, and development fundamentals

In his current role, Jeff works directly with consultants and other project stakeholders across the United States reviewing site-specific data to determine if a project is a good and technical fit for thermal remediation. We are looking forward to kicking off the summer at Fate’s on June 20th. We are excited to welcome AEG President, Nate Saraceno who will speaking on “Constructability Considerations for Landslide Mitigation Projects in Appalachia”.

This presentation will provide an overview of key constructability considerations for landslide mitigation projects in the Appalachian region. The focus will be on identifying potential challenges prior to and during the construction phase, and discussing strategies to overcome these challenges. The presentation will also explore best practices for project planning and management, as well as strategies for effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders. The aim is to provide practical guidance for successful implementation of landslide stabilization projects in the Appalachia.   While this presentation is largely designed to help early-career professionals, it serves as an important refresher for more seasoned attendees, who are also encouraged to share their related experiences during the Q&A at the end.
